The Academic Libraries Video Trust, a cooperative open to interested institutions, facilitates preservation of commercial video content (primarily VHS) no longer in distribution. The Trust expands upon the Section 108 Due Diligence Project (http://section108video.com/). Member libraries share responsibilities for due diligence searching, digitization, and creation of metadata, eliminating duplication of effort across institutions and building a database of video files for long-term preservation. The Trust leverages exceptions for reproduction by libraries established by U.S. copyright law (17 U.S. Code § 108) that allow for duplication of content that is damaged, deteriorating, lost, stolen, or in an obsolete format.
